Investindustrial agreed to acquire a 60% stake in Italian baby and healthcare products Artsana SpA group, which owns the popular Chicco brand, in a €1.3 billion deal aimed at accelerating the company’s oversees growth. Investindustrial will buy the controlling stake from the Catelli family, which will keep the remaining 40%. Michele Catelli will remain as chairman, and Claudio De Conto, who joined the company in 2013, will continue as CEO. “With the support of the new shareholder the expansion plans of the group will accelerate,” said Catelli. “We are happy to continue our commitment side by side with Investindustrial in this new phase.” Founded in 1990 by italian businessman Andrea C. Bonomi, Investindustrial invests in mid-market companies that are leaders in their fields. Bonomi served as chairman of Banca Popolare di Milano in 2011. He previously worked at the Saffa Industrial Group, Kleinwort Benson, and Lazard Frères & Co. He serves as a director of a number of companies including 21 Investimenti S.p.A. and 21 Centrale Partners. He served as a director of Ing. Castaldi SpA, and as a non-executive director of Inversiones Ibersuizas and Permasteelisa SPA. He received a B.Sc. in Business Administration from New York University. MFE is a leading international retailer in the childcare and children’s sector through the Prenatal, Toys Center, King Jouet and Bimbo Store chains, with over 500 stores around Europe. Artsana was established in 1946 on the shores of Lake Como by Pietro Catelli, who led the company until he passed away in 2006. The Artsana group has nearly 5.000 employees spread out over nineteen branches worldwide, eleven of which are in Europe. Artsana has five production plants throughout the European Union. Including dealers and distributors, the group markets its brands in over one hundred countries, with more than 300 Chicco sales points.
